Clipstream Audio 3 encodes regular digital audio
files and converts them into high quality streaming audio files playable
by a Java applet embedded in web pages.

Why re-encode into Clipstream Audio format?
- Playerless: Use Clipstream Audio 3 to play
high quality audio with a Java applet when you do not wish the visiting
user to have a specific player or plugin.
- Instant playback by streaming: The applet will begin
streaming to the user's computer immediately and begin playing while
continuing to download the file. Simply putting up a digital audio file
means that the user will have to download most of the file before it
starts playing.
- Bandwidth savings: streaming also is an advantage
because the user downloads only as much as they wish to listen, no more.
- Security: Clipstream Audio encoded files can
be secured to make it difficult to capture, rehost or codebase.
- Extensibility: Clipstream Audio works with
JavaScript, Flash interfaces or databases. For example, an audio classifieds
or music clip directory would need audio files to be linked into a database.
- High quality: Clipstream Audio encoded files
beat mp3 for instant playback at high fidelity levels. Lower bit rate
Clipstream files beat higher bitrate mp3, meaning you can save
bandwidth and storage by using lower bit rates versus heavier downloadable
digital audio.
What is the normal workflow for Clipstream Audio
3?
- Select input files: Drag-and-drop or individually
select mp3, .wav, .aiff, .cda files
- Encode: Encode the files into a
specified directory.
- Upload: FTP all the audio and common files to an
existing web server.
- Embed in web page: edit and publish the web pages
where the audio will be played from to include the proprietary Java
applet
How does the Clipstream Audio applet work?
The Clipstream Audio applet is generated by a
Java-enabled
browser to appear in the space of your webpage where you placed the code.
The applet can call upon a graphic buttonset, play automatically, loop or
even play in the background without graphics as defined by the user. The
applet calls upon Clipstream Audio 3 Encoder-generated audio files
uploaded to a web server.
What bit rates are needed for Clipstream Audio?
Clipstream Audio 3 offers two dialup bitrates -
32kbps (mono), 44kbps (mono) - and seven broadband bitrates - 64 (mono/stereo),
96 (mono/stereo), 128 (mono/stereo), 256, 512kbps that can all be offered
through a single applet. You have the option of including as many bitrates
as you wish depending upon your estimated audience.

What is Java?
Clipstream Audio uses Sun Microsystems or Microsoft
Java to render a secure applet (a tiny program generated by the browser)
. Java-enabled browsers are more than 90% of installed browsers meaning
that the vast majority of browsers are able to use the hundreds of thousands
of applets available on the web - including Clipstream Audio. (Clipstream
is a Sun Java partner in technology).
How is Clipstream Audio licensed?
Each Clipstream Audio applet is tied to a web domain
by a license key provided by Clipstream Audio sales representative
or the online purchasing system. The files will otherwise not play except
on a local hard drive (for testing purposes). An applet can be licensed
across several domains if requested.
How is Clipstream Audio secure?
Clipstream Audio-encoded files are:
- non-editable
- are not immediately downloadable from a web page
- the applets are licensed per server
- can be encoded with a secure ID so that they cannot be played back
except on that server (with optional SID/PPP package).
